Operating procedure

Click, right-click, middle-click and scroll inside the test pad. Every button and wheel step is counted, and a faulty switch that double-clicks gets flagged.

  1. Move the pointer into the test pad and click each button. The matching part of the mouse diagram lights up and its counter goes up by one.
  2. Single-click the left button about 20 times at a normal pace. If Chatter faults goes up, the switch is registering phantom double-clicks.
  3. Scroll up and down slowly. Each notch should count once in the right direction; jumps in the wrong direction point to a dirty or worn wheel encoder.
  4. Click as fast as you can to read your Clicks/s; the best second is kept in Max CPS.
  5. Back and Forward are captured in the pad so the page won't navigate away.

Fault codes

  1. MSE-E1

    Single clicks count as double-clicks

Fix That's switch chatter, the most common mouse fault. The metal contact inside the switch has worn and bounces. Compressed air sometimes helps for a while; the lasting fix is replacing the switch or using the warranty. Some gaming mice have a debounce-time setting in their software.

  2. MSE-E2

    Right-click opens a menu

Fix The test pad blocks the context menu. If one still appears, your mouse software may be remapping the button.

  3. MSE-E3

    Back/Forward buttons don't register

Fix Some mice send these buttons only when their driver software is running, or remap them to keyboard shortcuts. Check the mouse software and reset the buttons to their defaults.

  4. MSE-E4

The wheel scrolls the wrong way now and then

Fix The wheel's encoder is dirty or worn. Blow compressed air into the gap around the wheel while rolling it. If you see a lot of reversed steps, the encoder needs replacing.

  5. MSE-E5

Clicks don't register on a laptop touchpad

Fix Tap-to-click may be off. Turn it on in the touchpad settings, or press the physical click zone at the bottom of the pad.

Service notes

How do I test for a double-click problem?
Click the left button slowly and steadily inside the pad. Each press should add exactly one click. If Chatter faults increases, two presses arrived closer together than the threshold, which a human finger can't do: the switch is bouncing.
What threshold should I use for chatter faults?
80 ms is a good default. Very fast clickers can reach 60–70 ms between deliberate clicks, so lower the threshold if you're testing by clicking quickly.
What is a good clicks-per-second score?
Most people reach 6–8 CPS with regular clicking. Fast clickers hit 10–14, and techniques like jitter or butterfly clicking go higher.
Can I test the side buttons?
Yes. Back and Forward (buttons 4 and 5) are counted and won't navigate away while the pointer is over the pad.
Does this work with a touchpad or touchscreen?
Taps count as left clicks and two-finger scrolling counts as the wheel. Touchscreens don't have middle or side buttons.
